This dish is probably the most famous of Beijing food. So what is it exactly:

  • Slices of roasted duck meat
  • Beijing sauce
  • Cut green onions and cucumbers
  • Very thin pancakes called "bing" 饼 (or, in English, "Beijing doilies")

What you do is spread sauce, vegetables and slices of meat over the pancake, roll it up and eat.

Not all people will find duck meat to their liking. It has more fat than chicken and you need to get used to the texture. All in all most people really like it, and anyway, while you are in Beijing you have to try it at least once or Beijing experienced will not be complete.

Beijing Duck Kaoya

Nearly every restaurant in Beijing serves Beijing duck and you can choose either to have the "remainings" of you chosen duck (that is everything you don't see of the duck you bought. eg. the legs, etc) to be fried or to make a soup out of it in most restaurants.

The most famous restaurant to eat Beijing Duck in is QuanJuDe. However on duck costs 168RMB with 15RMB service fee. However, you can get it cheaper in any other restaurant for up to 100RMB for one duck and the quality remains nearly the same (if not even better because QuangJuDe's ducks are quite fat.) But seeing the duck being cut is an exclusive show only offered by QuanJuDe.
