The Silk Market or Silk Street is probably the busiest and most famous market in Beijing. It used to be a shopping mile (therefor also they name Silk Street) near the World Trade Center and was moved into a building in 2006. It's very adjacent to the subway and you can find pretty much anything there: clothes, shoes, jewelry, bags, all kinds of souvenirs, gadgets and more.

We are talking about 6 floors (one under ground) all packed with stands and very small shops:
  • Underground floor: shoes, bags, purses and other accessories
  • First floor - articles of clothing
  • Second floor -articles of clothing
  • Third floor - fabrics, bed sheets, custom made suits
  • Fourth - jewelry, pearls, souvenirs, gadgets, watches, electronic devices
  • Fifth - new floors mostly for expensive jewelry.

Shopping in the Silk Market can get long and tiring. If you get hungry or thirsty, there is a small grocery on the way out of the subway, and usually there is also a Jianbing stand right next to it.
If you exit the building and go to its east side you will find a line of western restaurants and coffee shops such as Subway, Lavazza, etc but you will also find enough good Chinese restaurants (from the main entrance on the first floor, turn right after the elevators).

And maybe the most important thing: bargain! Prices for T-shirt for example can start with anywhere from 200RMB till 400 RMB. What you usually pay for is of course way less than this. It takes experience to know at what price you can buy what. And well, if you don't get it at the price you would like there are always enough other stands. Try it for a few times and if it really nobody sell it to you at that price than go up for 10RMB. By the end of the your shopping tour even the most unexperienced will be an expert at the art of bargaining.

During the Olympic Games many athletes went to the Silk Market for a shopping tour, too. One big attraction of the Silk Market is also the tailor shop they have on the third floor. You can have your tailor made silk suit or dress made within one day.

Once you have been in Silk Market you will realize that one shopping trip there is nowhere near enough. You will find yourself planning for the next shopping tour already.

Directions
The easiest way to get to the silk market is to take the subway to YongAnLi station on the red line. Exit X goes straight to the underground floor of the silk market.
